Understanding The Different Fluids In Your Vehicle

Almost every oil change comes with a complimentary fluid top-off / check. But what exactly are those fluids? What is the importance of these fluids, and how often do they need to be replaced? Not topped off, but replaced. In this article, we will go over the different fluids found in your vehicle and why they are important to keep maintained.

Windshield Wiper Fluid

This is probably the most overlooked fluid in your vehicle. We only ever use this fluid when we are trying to clean the windshield of nasty pollen or dead bugs. This fluid is actually really important since it does just that. It cleans your windshield and allows for optimal visibility while driving.

Engine Coolant

Often known as antifreeze, this fluid is responsible for pulling heat from your engine. Engine coolant is often mixed with water to ensure parts of the cooling system do not freeze in the winter and ensure it won’t overheat during the summer. Since the coolant’s main job is to pull the heat from the engine, the coolant needs to be flushed frequently.

Transmission Fluid

Transmission fluid is the close relative to the engine oil in the since that it works the same, just for the transmission. Its main function is to keep the transmission’s moving parts from grinding and allowing them to move freely. The transmission fluid should be bright red in color, if you notice any leaks or any discoloration, bring your vehicle into our shop today for a flush.

Power Steering Fluid

Powersteering fluid helps enable you to turn your steering wheel freely. Have you ever tried to turn a steering wheel when the power steering was not working? It takes a feat of strength to turn the wheel. If you notice your steering wheel starts to stiffen up or become difficult to turn, you could be running low on power steering fluid.

Engine Oil

Engine oil is the most important fluid in your vehicle since it keeps the engine lubricated and prevents overheating. Without an engine, your vehicle is just a giant paper weight with wheels. Over time the engine oil will become filled with pollutants and will become less effective. If left for too long, the engine oil will become sludge-like and could cause the einge to sieze up. Don’t risk your engine’s life by skipping oil changes.

Brake Fluid

The brake fluid is what is responsible for closing the braking system against the tire which creates friction and allows the vehicle to come to a stop. Without enough brake fluid in the braking system, your brake pedal could hit the floor and the vehicle will not come to a stop.
